Rumour: Intel wants Larrabee in Xbox 720
>> From tweaktown.com:
Intel is pulling out all the stops to get its Larrabee GPUs inside Microsoft's next-gen Xbox (Xbox 720) or another console, according to The Inquirer citing unnamed sources.
As rumours go this doesn't sound too off the mark. MS needs a graphics chip for the Xbox 720, and Intel, along with NVIDIA and AMD, will have suitable parts available. The bigger surprise would be that MS refused to even hear Intel's sales pitch.
But the Inq has gone further to say that Intel is doing everything it can to table an deal MS can't refuse, going so far as offering to do the engineering work on thermal design (hopefully ensuring we won't ever see a repeat of the RROD nightmare), and is even prepared to hand over the rights so that MS can get the chip manufactured at any fab it chooses.
The main motivation behind all this for Intel is developer support. The PC graphics card installed base is dominated by NV with around 60% and AMD with 30% (according to the Valve Hardware Survey), and it's just basic economics that games developers will devote most of their resources to design and test their new titles on these two families of cards. Can Microsoft's Xbox 360 Hold its Second-Place Ranking?
>> From schaeffersresearch.com:
According to an interview with The Wall Street Journal, a Microsoft exec noted that about 75% of hardware sales take place following a price cut below $200. What's more, GameStop (GME) has boosted its expectations for Xbox 360 sales following the price drop, telling BusinessWeek that it expects sales to jump "anywhere from 1.5 times to 3 times current levels" as a result.
But while MSFT expects to continue to outpace Sony's PS3 sales, Nintendo may already be untouchable. In an interview with BusinessWeek, Don Mattrick, senior vice-president of Microsoft's Interactive Entertainment Business, said "I'm not at a point where I can say we're going to beat Nintendo." Analysts: Japan Xbox 360 Price Cuts Precursors To North American Cuts
>> From gamasutra.com:
Though Japan has traditionally been a weak market for the Xbox 360, Microsoft recently applied price cuts of about 30 percent there, following a complete sellout thanks to the launch of popular RPG Tales of Vesperia. The basic Arcade SKU was discounted to to ¥19,800 ($183), the 60GB Pro to ¥29,800 ($276), and the 120GB Elite to ¥39,800 ($368).
Says Sebastian, "We believe the Japan announcement is a likely precursor to more aggressive pricing of the Xbox 360 in the U.S, and we continue to expect a lower $199 price point on the base Arcade SKU (below the $249 Wii price point), as well as lower $299 and $399 prices for the 60GB and 120GB versions, respectively."
Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter says comparisons to previous console generations show "room for significant sales growth" this year if price cuts are implemented. Pachter currently sees "relatively stagnant demand" for Xbox 360, and pegs September 7 as the date speculated for Microsoft to reduce prices.
Xbox Japan Honcho Says Price Cut Leak Was 'Disappointing'
>> From kotaku.com:
Yesterday's big announcement at the Tokyo Xbox Media Briefing 2008 was across the board Xbox 360 console price cuts. But that news was leaked early! Whoops. Microsoft was left with announcing, hrm, what exactly was Microsoft left with? After the event, we tracked down Xbox Japan honcho Takashi Sensui:
* Was it disappointing that the console price cuts leaked before you could announce it? "It was disappointing. Very unfortunate." * That was your only big announcement today. "That was one of our big announcements."
PAX 08: A few fresh New Xbox Experience tidbits
>> From xbox360fanboy.com:
What exciting dash goodness? Check the list below:
* Holy beautiful transitions! This latest Fall update build included never before seen transition effects including nifty fades, smooth sweeps and (our personal favorite) the guide pop up animation. We can't explain the transition effects, but trust that their addition definitely enhances the overall dashboard experience. Yum! * Dashboard themes will now instantly load a preview when hovered over. And, as an added bonus, the preview loading effect is sexy as hell. * While in a party, each person's gamer picture is placed on the top right hand side of the dashboard. When alone and party-less, only your gamer picture and gamercard are displayed. * Your overly Wii-like Avatar's comic-style text balloon displays your gamercard's motto. * EVERY Xbox 360 game's Xbox.com information (including game description, features and screenshots) is pulled into the dashboard while browsing the Xbox Live Marketplace. Microsoft: Exclusives 'a little less important'
>> From gamerush.zoomshare.com:
Boris Schneider-Johne, product manager for Xbox 360 at Microsoft Germany, explained the company's stance on the importance of exclusive titles.
"That is difficult to assess. In the past, in the eighties and nineties, that was a major issue. I remember the big 'Mario vs. Sonic' debates. What we see today is that the influence of exclusive titles on the sales curves becomes ever smaller," Schneider-Johne told Golem.de in an interview.
"In addition, we are in a situation that there is a head-to-head race on several consoles and that nobody is super clear in leadership - especially in matters of the PlayStation 3 against Xbox 360."
Maximus 360 Firmware Toolbox v4.8
>> Maximus released a new version of his 360 Firmware Toolbox(info)(info). What's new/fixed (since v4.6): * ADDED: Custom Spoofing Option on "Tools->Spoof Firmware" option (it asks for your 96 bytes inquiry.bin), this could be safer for spoofing drives to Liteon because appears Liteon drives have per-drive specific inquiry response. If you lost you inquiry.bin file and cannot redump it, then go ahead with listed Liteon spoofing option (it will work but you will not have the factory value). * ADDED: You can now open key.bin file from main window instead of manually type the key (will ask for a 16 bytes file). * FIXED: Clicking on firmware file didnt open properly on toolbox. * ADDED: Spoofing drives to Liteon DG model * ADDED: Detect/Remove Hardware (DVD-ROM) (on File Menu) * ADDED: Ixtreme 1.4 No-Check Bit firmware for 79 Drives * FIXED: Several bugs. * Note: The No-check bit option for 79 drives is not set as default firmware on Smart hack patcher option, you need to choose it from the list on the Special Firmwares section, the reason is it could be unsafe and lead to M$ detection.
*Note - At this time, it is currently not confirmed safe to use a samsung or hitachi in place of the lite-on. This is due to a specific identification tag that is generated with the SS. There will be firmwares released in the next few weeks to account for the correct values! -Iriez

Microsoft Japan to cut price of Xbox 360 console by 30 pct
>> From tradingmarkets.com:
The Japanese unit of U.S. software giant Microsoft Corp plans to slash the price of its Xbox 360 home video game console by nearly 30 percent in a move that will undercut the more popular Wii machine from Nintendo Co, the Nikkei reported on Monday, without citing sources.
Microsoft will lower the price of the Xbox 360's Arcade model by 8,000 yen ($73.50) to 19,800 yen, making the device the first among competing consoles to carry a price tag less than 20,000 yen, the business daily said. The company will reduce the prices of the two other models as well by 5,000 yen to 8,000 yen, the report said.
SickMods' ATX to Xbox Converter 2
>> From sickmods.net:
The ATX to XBOX Converter 2 features several new features and improvements. This device will convert any ATX power supply to work with an Xbox1 motherboard (versions 1.0-1.5). The main improvement to this PSU Converter is the addition of holes which you can connect each of your connectors to. Since the ATX layout differs from the Xbox layout, this eliminates the hassle of re-wiring each wire individually to switch its location. You may simply solder the connectors to each side, or buy it with the connectors pre-installed, and the Converter will be plug-and-play. We have also added three red LEDs, which will aid in troubleshooting, should there be a problem with your power supply or in the wiring.
GoW2 Producer Talks about Used Xbox360 Potential
>> From gamasutra.com:
Gamasutra: We're getting a few years into the Xbox 360 lifespan experience; where do you think we are, technologically, in terms of the potential of the system, this generation?
* Rod Fergusson: That's a good question. I mean, I'm not the technical guy, so my ability to speak to where the engine goes is -- all I know is that with the two to three more years of optimization that we've had, we're much further along than I think, three years ago, we thought we were going to get. So I think we're certainly approaching the upper end of it, as far as what developers are able to do with it, but just looking at all the demos we saw today -- ours and others -- it's clear that all the games just keep improving, and keep pushing that bar. I think it's just a matter of, you know, it's a slow cycle; you only get a kick at it every couple years, and so it takes a while for people to see that progress. There will be games in development that won't ship until 2010, and I'm sure they'll look killer, just because, again, they'll have more time with it, and learn from mistakes and optimizations of others. So, I don't know; I think we're getting up there, but I still think there's room to grow.
DVDKey32 Lite-On Key Retriever
>> >>A Software/Hardware combination method has been discovered on how to extract your drivekey for a lite-on drive... This exe is a win32 app that extracts the drive key from the Lite-On 360 drive via Serial.
Be warned: This win32 program does not use the windows API. The exe writes directly to the ATA controller's I/O ports (which requires Geek Hideout's I/O dll, which I have included in the rar). It also requires that you be using an ATA - SATA adapter to connect your 360 drive to your PC, or an SATA controller that has a legacy mode (try the BIOS setup options on your controller).
Geremia - initial concept C4eva - the CDB's and how to send them Podger - for the code Seventhson - for the userspace parallel ATA driver
*Please note that this is NOT a firmware hack for a lite-on drive. It is just a way to retrieve the key from the drive for use with another drive (samsung, hitachi, benq) that is capable of being modified.
This release is a revision of the original DVDKey released by Geremia for use within a windows operating system. You can find the original DOS based version by Geremia here
DeViLs360 has written a thorough tutorial using the DOS based version of DVDKey here, and should be updating shortly to include DVDKey32. The tutorial includes the creation of the RS232 Serial cable to connect to the drive, getting the key from the lite-on and spoofing it to work with another drive.

Reports Of Hacked Xbox Live Accounts Stir Concerns Over Gamers' Security
>> From mtv.com:
Earlier this month, a hacker bragged that he'd gained access to the Xbox Live identity -- or gamertag, as it's known -- of "Halo 3" multiplayer producer Joe Tung. This allowed him access to Tung's account and personal information. Tung isn't alone.
For almost three years now, dozens of gamers who believed their Xbox 360 online identities were safe and secure have taken to message boards and Web sites to report gamertags stolen by zealous hackers. The practice has become prevalent enough that tutorials about how to do it have popped up across the Internet, heightened after the release of Bungie Studio's sci-fi online shooter "Halo 3."
"People don't hack accounts by using programs and any other bullsh-- that you hear around [Xbox Live]," the hacker claimed. "It's as simple as picking up the phone."
The hacks are typically accomplished through a popularized technique called social engineering, when someone is unknowingly coerced into revealing confidential information. This isn't the first time it's come up with "Halo 3." It was widely documented by technology sites in March 2007, then again last December and, based on the evidence surrounding Tung's account and others, remains a prominent form of abuse.
The danger stems from the apparent failure of Microsoft customer service to keep track of repeated account access, our expert said. This allows hackers employing social-engineering tactics to call support lines without being tracked. A hacker can then use this information to gain access to a user's Xbox Live gamertag, which typically has a credit card attached.
ESA Applauds Prison Sentences for New York and Florida Game Pirates
>> From the ESA press release:
The Entertainment Software Association today applauded the recent sentencings of two convicted pirates to significant prison time. These rulings send a clear message that intellectual property theft and game piracy are serious offenses. On August 20, 2008, U.S. District Judge Frank D. Whitney in the Western District of North Carolina sentenced Kevin Fuchs of West Amherst, NY, to eight months in prison, to be followed by eight months of home confinement during two years of court supervision. On August 15, 2008, U.S. District Judge T.S. Ellis III in the Eastern District of Virginia sentenced Kifah Maswadi of Oakland, FL, to fifteen months in prison, followed by three years' supervised release and fifty hours of community service. Maswadi was also ordered to pay $415,900 in restitution.
"We commend the U.S. Department of Justice Criminal Division's Computer Crime and Intellectual Property Section, the U.S. Attorney's Offices for the Western District of North Carolina and the Eastern District of Virginia and the Federal Bureau of Investigation for their work in bringing these criminals to justice," said Michael D. Gallagher, CEO of the ESA, the trade group representing U.S. computer and video game publishers. "These decisions illustrate, once again, that game piracy will not be tolerated and the extent at which these criminals will be prosecuted. The ESA and its members will continue to support law enforcement's efforts to protect the intellectual property of our industry."
On January 3, 2007, Fuchs plead guilty to conspiring to reproduce and distribute copyrighted works, including entertainment software. Fuchs played a key role in the "warez scene" where he was a "supplier," whose role was to obtain pre-release copies of copyrighted software, and a "tester" who checked the functionality of pirated software after the copy protection was removed or bypassed by other warez scene members. This case was part of Operations Fastlink and Site Down, two of the largest piracy investigations conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Justice. The operations targeted "warez groups," which illegally distribute copyrighted movies, games, software and movies online.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation field office in Charlotte, NC, handled the investigation of defendant Fuch's activities. Trial Attorneys Richard D. Green and John Zacharia of the U.S. Department of Justice Criminal Division's Computer Crime and Intellectual Property Section, Assistant U.S. Attorney Eric Klumb, along with Assistant U.S. Attorney Corey Ellis of the Western District of North Carolina, handled the prosecution.
The Fuchs sentencing comes on the heels of a fifteen month sentence imposed on a Florida game pirate. On June 3, 2008, Kifah Maswadi pleaded guilty to one count of criminal copyright infringement. He admitted to selling "Power Players," which are game systems that connect directly to a television and were pre-loaded with at least 76 pirated copies of video games. From 2006 to 2007, Maswadi sold these game systems containing illegal copies of games via the Internet and earned more than $390,000 through this illegal activity. Maswadi was facing up to three years in prison but received a reduced sentence for cooperating with the government.
